The President of India is elected by an electoral committee which consists of the electoral members of both the houses of the Parliament and also the elected members of the State Legislative Assemblies.The election is held by the means of Single Transferable Vote Method according to the Proportional Representation system.
Following are the functions and powers of the President:
1. All the activities of the government take place under the name of the President.
2. He has the power to issue all major law and policy making decisions of the government.
3. He makes all the major appointments including the chief justice of India, judges of the supreme courts and high courts, etc.
4. Any international treaty or agreement can be signed only with the consent of the President.
5. He is also the supreme commander of the defence forces in India.
