Question

How is regeneration different from reproduction ?

Open in App
Solution

Regeneration is a type of asexual reproduction. The process of regeneration involves the capacity to give rise to an entire organism from a cut part. It is seen in small invertebrates such as Planaria and Hydra. Here the reproduction occurs directly from the main organism or a single parent which gets cut into various parts and all those parts develop into a new organism.

Reproduction is the process by which new offspring are produced from their parents. It is of two types asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. In asexual reproduction, a new individual is produced from a single parent, and in sexual reproduction, two parents are involved and offspring receives some characters from the father and some characters from the mother. Reproduction is necessary for the continuation of species and survival of organisms from generation to generation.

Regeneration is different from reproduction as reproduction does not involve the loss of mother organism to form the offspring. In the case of regeneration, the body of a mother organism gets segregated to produce new generation of offspring which causes the loss of mother organism. It also does not involves the requirement of two parents like sexual reproduction.
