Question

how is sER and rER important for membrane biogenesis?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Membrane biogenesis can be defined as the process of synthesis of a cell membrane or plasma membrane of the cell. The cell membrane is synthesized using proteins and lipids produced in the cell. Endoplasmic reticulum plays a major role in membrane biogenesis.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (containing ribosomes on the surface) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (without ribosomes on the surface). The rough endoplasmic reticulum is the main site for the synthesis of proteins and while smooth endoplasmic synthesises lipids.

Thus, endoplasmic reticulum acts as the main site for synthesis of proteins and lipids which are needed for the biogenesis of plasma membrane.
