Question

How is the corrosion of copper a redox reaction? Specify oxidation no., reducing and oxidizing agent, what is oxidized and reduced?

Open in App
Solution

Copper reacts with oxygen and forms copper oxide. 4 Cu + O2 2 Cu2OHere In the LHS side copper oxidation number is 0 and in the RHS sidecopper oxidation number is Cu2O2 x + -2 = 02x =+2x= +1So there is increase in oxidation number. That means copper undergoes oxidation andcopper is a reducing agent. Oxygen oxidation number changed from 0 to -2 in the RHS side. There isdecrease in oxidation number. So its a reduced and oxygen acts as an oxidising agent. As both oxidation and reduction occur this reaction is a redox reaction.
