Question

How is the frequency of sound varied in the three types of musical instruments?

Solution

String Instruments

  1. The instruments in which sound is produced by the vibrations in stretched metal wires are called string instruments e.g. sitar, violin, etc.
  2. The frequency of vibration depends on the length, thickness, and tightness of the strings.
  3. A thin string produces a high-frequency sound than a thick string.
  4. A short string produces a high-frequency sound than a long string.
  5. Higher the tightness, the higher will be the frequency.

Wind Instruments

  1. The instruments in which sound is produced by the vibrations in air column are called wind instruments e.g. flute, shehnai, etc.
  2. The frequency depends on the length of the air column.
  3. Longer the air column, the less will be the frequency of the sound produced.

Percussion Instruments

  1. The instruments in which sound is produced by the vibrations of a stretched skin are called percussion instruments e.g. tabla, drums, etc.
  2. The frequency is directly proportional to the extent of the stretching of the skin.
