Question

How is the process of guttation different from transpiration?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Guttation: Guttation is the loss of water droplets from the marginal tips of a plant.
  2. Transpiration: Transpiration is the process of removal or loss of water in the form of water vapour from the aerial parts of the plants, mainly the leaves.
GuttationTranspiration
1.Guttation takes place through small pores known as hydathodes.Transpiration occurs through small pores present generally on the lower surfaces of the leaves, known as the stomata.
2.Water that comes out is from the xylem and it is in liquid form. The water lost during transpiration is in vapour form.
3.Occurs during the night or in cold periods. This phenomenon occurs only in the presence of sunlight.
4.It does not involve the phenomenon of evaporationIt involves the phenomenon of evaporation (conversion of liquid state to vapour state).
5.It does not cause wilting of plants.

Excessive loss of water due to transpiration causes wilting of plants.

Wilting is a state in which a plant loses its structural rigidness.
