How is the process of guttation different from transpiration?
Guttation | Transpiration | |
1. | Guttation takes place through small pores known as hydathodes. | Transpiration occurs through small pores present generally on the lower surfaces of the leaves, known as the stomata. |
2. | Water that comes out is from the xylem and it is in liquid form. | The water lost during transpiration is in vapour form. |
3. | Occurs during the night or in cold periods. | This phenomenon occurs only in the presence of sunlight. |
4. | It does not involve the phenomenon of evaporation | It involves the phenomenon of evaporation (conversion of liquid state to vapour state). |
5. | It does not cause wilting of plants. | Excessive loss of water due to transpiration causes wilting of plants. Wilting is a state in which a plant loses its structural rigidness. |
