Question

How is the refractive index of a material related to velocity of light in vacuum or air and the velocity of light in a given medium?

Open in App
Solution

When a light travels from one medium to another, its velocity and wavelength changes but its frequency remains the same.
Let say, light travels from air to a medium having refractive index n.
Speed of light in air is c.
Then, speed of light in the given medium is given by vm=cn
