Question

How is the relative density of a liquid is measured with the help of a relative density bottle?

Solution

  1. The relative density of a liquid is determined by using a relative density bottle.
  2. It is a small glass bottle and it has a stopper with a fine hole.
  3. This bottle is used for finding the mass of equal volumes of liquid.
  4. When the bottle is completely filled with liquid and its mouth is closed by inserting the stopper, excess liquid comes out through the capillary tube.
  5. This ensures that the volume of any liquid filled in it remains the same.
  6. Relative density of any liquid can be calculated using below formula.
  7. Relative density =MassofanyvolumeofliquidMassofequalvolumeofwater.
