Solution

Definition of sound

Sound is a vibration that travels through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid, or solid as an acoustic wave.

Production and transmission of sound.

  1. The production of sound occurs when an object vibrates.
  2. We, human beings produce vocal sounds by vibrating our vocal cords, which then vibrate the air molecule and the sound is, therefore, transmitted through the air.

Hearing the sound.

  1. Sound is produced when a body vibrates owing to any force. This vibration produces waves that travel via a medium to reach their destination, our ear, where they are heard.
  2. The outer portion of the ear is funnel-shaped. When sound enters, it travels through a canal to the eardrum, which is a thin stretched membrane at the other end.
  3. The eardrum transmits vibrations to the inner ear, which are then transmitted to the brain, where the sounds are heard.
