The spinal cord is a part of the Central Nervous System (CNS). It is a continuation of the medulla oblongata that continues downward posteriorly. It receives impulses from the brain and transmits them to different body parts.
Protections in the spinal cord
The spinal cord is located in the neural canal, encased by a bony vertebral column.
The spinal cord is externally covered by a protective coating made of three layers. This is called the meninges.
The spaces between the layers of meninges are filled with the watery cerebrospinal fluid.
The role of these multiple layers is to provide physical support, protection, nutrition, and shock absorption to the spinal cord.
