Solution

Sarcomere is the basic structural and functional unit of muscles. It is teh region between two Z lines. Surrounding the Z-line is the region of the I-band where thin filaments are found.
A-band follows the I band, it has single thick filament.
Within A band there is H zone of thick filaments whchis lighter in appearance.
Look for M line within the H zone, which is formed of cross-connecting elements of the cytoskeleton.
Have a look at this diagram, where you can see all these bands and zones.

The key regions known as the I and H band whichhave spaceand can compress .
the space enough for compression allows the cross bridge cycle of thick and thin filaments to occur.
The filaments slideover each other. Their elasticity provides the underpinning of muscle contraction.
