Question

How is water purified for drinking and scientific purposes?

Open in App
Solution

Purification of water for drinking purposes:

  • Natural water present in rivers or lakes is brought to waterworks using canals and pipes.
  • In Waterworks, the mixing of water with alum, soda, and lime solutions takes place.
  • This results in the formation of aluminum hydroxide, a jelly-like, sticky solid.
  • The water is then sent to the settling tank.
  • As the name of the tank suggest the impurities are going to settle down in this tank.
  • The settle-down impurities can be separated.
  • The water still contains some type of impurities.
  • Therefore this water is passed through filters of boulders, gravel, coarse sand, and fine sand in a successive manner.
  • Water obtained after this successive filtration is chlorinated.
  • This water is then allowed for distribution for commercial purposes.

Purification of water for scientific purposes:

  • Water used for scientific purposes is known as distilled water.
  • The distilled water name suggests that scientific water is obtained by repeat distillation of ordinary water.
