Question

How long can muscle cells of vertebrates work in the absence of oxygen ?

Open in App
Solution

Muscles can work for around 5 -7 minutes using an anaerobic system before oxygen is required. The muscle continues to contract in the absence of oxygen through Glycolysis. Muscles burn oxygen to provide the required energy to maintain the continuous activity, such as distance running, vigorous exercises etc. Muscles can break down glucose molecules in the absence of oxygen for shorter activities.
