Question

How many ATP's are produced by complete oxidation of PEP?

Open in App
Solution

Total 38 ATPs are produced by complete oxidation of one molecule of glucose. Out of 38 ATPs, glycolysis produces 2 ATP, Kerb's cycle produces 2 ATP and electron transport chain produces 34 ATP. In glycolysis, one molecule of glucose produces 2 molecules of PEP (phosphoenolpyruvic acid). Also, 2 molecules of ATP are produced from conversion of 2 molecules of PEP into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid.
Thus, complete oxidation of one molecule of PEP produces 19 ATP molecules.
