Codon:

  1. A codon is a nucleotide triplet within mRNA.
  2. Each codon is made of three base pairs, made up of either A, U, G and C.
  3. Each codon translates into a single amino acid.
  4. AUG is the start codon for methionine amino acid in the polypeptide chain.
  5. There exist total 64 codons, 61 coding for unique amino acid and the remaining 3 are stop codons namely UAA, UAG and UGA.
