Nucleotides are composed of four components- a base, deoxyribose sugar, and phosphate residue.
DNA is composed of four types of monomers or nucleotides-
Adenine: It is one of the purines bases which is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen, arranged in two rings, one 5 membered and the other 6 membered. It pairs with thymine by a double hydrogen bond.
Guanine: It is the other purine base which is made up of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, arranged in two rings as adenine. It pairs with cytosine by three hydrogen bonds.
Thymine: It is one of the pyrimidine bases which is made up of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen in a single six-membered ring.
Cytosine: It is also a pyrimidine base and is made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen in a single six-membered ring.
