Sodium atom consists of 11 electrons and the electronic configuration is 2, 8, 1. Inorder to attain the electronic configuration of the nearest noble gas, it loses one valence electron which is present in its outer most 'M' shell and Na+ ion is formed.
On losing the valence electron from ‘M’ shell, the penultimate ‘L’ shell of sodium ion becomes the outermost shell and it has eight electrons present in it.
