Question

how many grams of Oxygen will be needed to born 96 of magnesium for producing magnesium oxide

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
The reaction of Mg with oxygen to form MgO can be written as:
2 Mg + O2 ---> 2 MgO
Given:
Mass of Mg = 96 g
Molar mass of Mg = 24.3 g/mol
Moles of Mg = mass / molar mass
= 96 g / 24.3 g/mol
= 3.95 moles

According to balanced chemical reaction:
2 moles of Mg react with = 1 mole of oxygen
3.95 moles of Mg will react with = ( ½ ) x 3.95 = 1.975 moles of oxygen
Mass of oxygen = Moles x molar mass
= 1.975 moles x 32 g/mol
= 63.2 g of oxygen

Answer = 63.2 g of oxygen
