Question

How many lines are determined by three distinct points?

Open in App
Solution

Estimate the number of possible lines:

  1. To draw a line we required at least two points.
  2. If the three points are collinear then only one line can be drawn using these three points.
  3. In this case, all three points can be connected by just one straight line,
  4. If points are not collinear then three lines are possible using these three points.
  5. In this case, by creating a triangle, three distinct straight lines will link the three points.

Hence, one line is possible for collinear points, and three lines are possible for non-collinear points
