How do we define a molecule to be planar?
Simply put, all the atoms shall lie on the same plane?
That is a workable definition. For instance, by definition,
tetrahedral molecules like methane, and pyramidal H3O+
cannot be planar! At the most 3 atoms can lie in a plane not 4!
The triiodide anion is linear. As is acetylene. The same logic
can be extended to ICl−2. Water is bent but the three atoms
all lie on the same plane. Ethene is planar as well. 5!
