Question

How many molecules are synthesized by 1 molecule of acetyl Co-A and how?

Solution

Dear student,
I think your question is incomplete.
so I assumed that you asked for number of molecules of ATP.

A grand total of 12 ATP molecules is formed during complete oxidation of one mole of acetyl-CoA, i.e., during one turn of the citric acid cycle.

Out of these 12 ATP molecules, only one ATP is produced directly at the level of the cycle itself (i.e., at the substrate level) in the reaction catalyzed by succinyl-CoA synthase. And the rest 11 ATP molecules are generated as a consequence of oxidation-reduction reactions of the cycle. Three molecules of NADH and one mole of FADH2 are produced in one turn of the cycle. The oxidation of one mole of NADH by O2 results in the formation of 3 ATP molecules from ADP plus Pi, thus producing a total of 9 ATP molecules. However, the oxidation of FADH2 by O2 produces 2 molecules of ATP, rather than 3.

I hope you understand.
