The CN group of the nitrile is reduced to CH2NH2 group. PhCNNa(Hg)-ethanol −−−−−−−−PhCH2NH2
From the reaction it is clear that the number of carbon atoms in reactant as well as in product are same. Thus there is no more extra carbon in product.
