Question

How Many Nodes Are In An Orbital?

Open in App
Solution

The number of nodes present in an orbital:

  1. Angular nodes and Radial nodes are present in an orbital.
  2. Angular nodes have fixed angles which is determined by azimuthal quantum number while Radial nodes have fixed nodes which is determined by principal quantum number. The number of nodes(N) =n-l-1.
  3. For example- To determine the number of nodes present in 2p orbital. We know that n=2 and l=1
  4. Then, the number of nodes N=n-l-1N=2-1-1N=0

Therefore, An orbital has two nodes: Angular nodes and Radial nodes.
