Question

How many number of protons present in 32g of SO2

Open in App
Solution

  • Divide the given mass by the molecular weight of SO2 to get number of moles (n), then multiply moles by Avogadro's number to get number of molecules (N).

    Atomic weights:

    S = 32.07 g/mole
    O = 16.00 g/mole

    Molecular weight:

    SO2 = 32 + 2(16.00) = 64 g/mole

    n = (32 g) / (64 g/mole) = 0.5 moles

    N = nA = (0.5 moles) (6.02 x 1023molecules/mole) = 3.01 x 1023molecules

    There are about 3.01 x 1023molecules of SO2 in 32 g of SO2
  • The number of protons in Sulphur is 16 and the number of protons of oxygen is 8 since the atomic number of sulphur and oxygen is 16 and 8 respectively
  • The total number of protons in one molecule of SO2 are 16+(2×8)=32protons
  • So one molecule of SO2 contains 32 protons.

Hence the total number of protons in 3.01×1023 molecules is32×3.01×1023=9.632×1024protons
