Solution

Reactivity with bases:

  • Bases react with either acids or amphoteric oxides.
  • Amphoteric oxides react with both acids and bases, in reaction with acids they act as a base while bases act as acids.
  • Al2O3 : It reacts with base Sodium hydroxide to give Sodium aluminium hydroxide.

Al2O3(s)+2NaOH(aq)+3H2O(l)2NaAl(OH)4(s)

  • MgO: It does not reacts with any basic compound because Magnesium oxide itself is the base.
  • BeO : It reacts with a base like Sodium hydroxide, due to its acidic nature.

BeO(s)+2NaOH(aq)Na2BeO2(s)+H2O(l)

  • SeO2: Base does not react with Selenium oxide.
  • NO2: Nitrogen oxide reacts with Sodium hydroxide to give Sodium nitrate, Sodium nitrite, and water.

NO2(g)+2NaOH(aq)NaNO2(s)+NaNO3(s)+H2O(l)

  • PbO: When Lead oxide reacts with Sodium hydroxide there is the formation of salt and water.

PbO(s)+2NaOH(aq)Na2PbO2(s)+H2O(l)

  • As2O3: Arsenic oxide is amphoteric in nature, it reacts with Sodium hydroxide to give Arsenite.

As2O3(s)+6NaOH(aq)2Na3AsO3(s)+3H2O(l)

  • Therefore, only Al2O3,BeO,NO2,PbO,As2O3 reacts with a base.

Hence, only five of the above compounds react with the base.
