The reaction of methylenecyclohexane osmium tetroxide followed by the action of sodium hydrogen sulphite forms 1-(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexanol. This is syn-hydroxylation reaction in which two -OH groups are added to the same side of carbon-carbon double bond.
