Each cell in the human body contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. There are 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes among them.
Both sex chromosomes are X chromosomes in females. Males have X and Y chromosomes, whereas females have X and Y.
After sperm and ovum fertilization, zygotic cells have 46 chromosomes, with 23 chromosomes from each parent. The sperm has 22+X or 22+Y, and the ovum has 22+X. As a result, a human gamete has 22 autosomes.
