Sex chromosomes can be defined as the chromosomes which have genes for the determination of sex.
They are also known as allosomes or heterosomes.
Chromosomes are the thread-like materials present inside the nucleus which contains genetic information.
In human beings, there are a total of 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 in total), out of which 22 pairs are called autosomes (other than sex chromosomes) and 1 pair is sex chromosomes which determine the sex of the newborns.
Both males and females have 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes.
The male has one X and one Y sex chromosome and the female has two X chromosomes.
