Rajendra Chola I , son of Rajaraja I came to power after his father's rule. He became famous in the history of South India because of his military achievements and expansionist policy. He ruled from 1014 to 1044. He made successful campaigns against Rashtrakutas and region around the state of Karnataka.He also succeeded in defeating the Western Chalukyas.

Rajendra also succeeded in conquering the whole of Srilanka in the south. He even made successful campaigns against the Pandyas and the Cheras in 1018 A.D. Due to his victorious military achievements he was popularly known as ' Jayasimha Saraban'.
