Question

How many shells are there? Can you name them, with the numbers of electrons carry by them ?

Open in App
Solution

The shell which is very closest to the nucleus is called as first shell or ‘k’ shell, followed by the second shell or ‘L’ shell, then third shell or ‘M’ shell and so on further and further more from the nucleus which is center of an atom. Each of the electron shell should contain a fixed number of electrons and associated with a particular range of electron energy.
Electron shell capacity = 2n2
Where,
n – Shell number or Energy level or Principal quantum number
The maximum numbers of electrons that can occupy a specific energy level are,

Shell Number (Shell letter) Maximum no of Electrons in each Shell (2n2)
1 (K) 2 (1) 2 = 2
2 (L) 2 (2) 2 = 8
3 (M) 2 (3) 2 = 18
4 (N) 2 (4) 2 = 32
5 (O) 2 (5) 2 = 50
