Question

How many signals does the human nervous system carry throughout the body

Open in App
Solution

Dear student.

The exact number of signals cannot be identified because it depends on a lot of situations generated inside our body and even outside the surrounding. There are specific neurons or sensory receptor that detects the stimulus.

The nervous system is divided into - central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS consists of the brain and spinal chord while the PNS consists of the nerves that connect the central nervous system to different parts of the body.

The central nervous system receives information from all parts of the body and also sends information to the muscles. Communication between the CNS and body parts is facilitated by the nerves of PNS.

PNS is further categorized into somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system(ANS). Somatic nervous system transmit impulses to and from CNS to voluntary organs such as skeletal muscles. Autonomic nervous system transmit impulses to and from CNS to involuntary organs such as heart. ANS is further classified into sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.

Autonomic nervous system is divided into two subsystems: the parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system.

The parasympathetic system is responsible for stimulation of activities that occur when the body is at rest like sexual arousal, salivation, urination, digestion etc. Its action is complementary to the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for stimulating activities associated with the fight-or-flight response and constantly active to maintain homeostasis.

Sensory neurons carry information from the sensory organs to brain or spinal cord while as motor neurons carry messages from the brain or spinal cord to the muscle or glands.
Motor neuron - transmits messages from the brain to the muscles and glands.
