Question

How many spoons can be electroplated by silver when 7 ampere current is passed through electrolyte cell of AgNO3 for 1.93 hours? 0.01 gm Ag layer is deposited on each spoon. (Ag=108 g.mol1).

Open in App
Solution

Charge passed through the electrolyte:
Q=It
Q=7×1.93×3600 C
Q=48636 C
Reduction process:
Ag++eAg
One mole of electron charge (96500 C) will produce 108 g Ag
Moles of electron=4863696500=0.504
Total silver deposited:
=0.504×108=54.432 g Ag
coating on one spoon =0.01 g Ag
number of spoons coated × coating on 1 spoon = 54.432
number of spoons coated =54.4320.01
=5443 spoons
