Coal tar is a mixture of complex hydrocarbon produced by the pyrolysis of coal.
It is thick, black liquid with unpleasant smell.
Coal tar contains chemicals , some examples are: benzene, naphthalene, phenols, aniline, and many other organic chemicals. While fractional distillation of Coal tar gives many chemical substances which are used in the preparation of dyes, explosives, paints, drugs etc.
Some of the chemicals in coal tar adversely affect human health and the environment.
