Coal tar is a mixture of complex hydrocarbon produced by the pyrolysis of coal.
It is thick, black liquid with unpleasant smell.
Coal tar contains $10, 000$ chemicals , some examples are: benzene, naphthalene, phenols, aniline, and many other organic chemicals. While fractional distillation of Coal tar gives many chemical substances which are used in the preparation of dyes, explosives, paints, drugs etc.
