An organ system consists of a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions.
There are 11 organ systems in the human body
Different organ systems:
Cardiovascular system
This system consists of the heart, which pumps blood, and blood vessels such as arteries and veins.
It circulates blood to all parts of our body.
Digestive system
The digestive system begins with the mouth and ends at the rectum and anus.
This system is responsible for the breaking down of ingested food and absorption of nutrients and the elimination of the waste produced by the body.
Endocrine system
The glands of the endocrine system secrete hormones that regulate most of the body processes like growth, reproduction, metabolism, etc.
Lymphatic system
It consists of lymph, lymph nodes and vessels, collecting ducts and spleen.
This system transports clean fluid called lymph in our body back to the blood and drains excess fluids from the tissues and cells of the body.
It also carries the white blood cells (lymphocytes).
Muscular system
The muscular system comprises of all muscles throughout the body that move the skeleton, maintain posture through steady contraction, and generate heat through cell metabolism.
Humans have three types of muscles - skeletal, cardiac and smooth.
Nervous system
This system consists of the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system.
The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord
The peripheral nervous system is made up of all the nerves that connects the CNS and other body parts.
The entire nervous system controls all of the other systems of the body.
Reproductive system
The main function of reproductive system is to create human life.
It consists of the prostate gland, penis, testis, scrotum, ductus deferens in males
It consists of mammary glands, ovary, uterus, vagina, fallopian tube in females.
Respiratory system
This system supplies the body with oxygen for cellular respiration by inhalation and disposes of carbon dioxide by exhalation.
It consists of air passages, pulmonary vessels and the lungs.
It also helps in speech and smell.
Skeletal system
The skeletal system supports and protects the body’s internal organs.
It provides the framework and shape to our bodies.
The bones are also connected to major muscles to allow movement.
Urinary system
It consists of the kidneys, renal pelvis, ureters, bladder and urethra.
This system is responsible for eliminating waste products of metabolism.
The system is also responsible for maintaining the balanced fluid volume, maintaining the blood electrolyte concentration, and normal pH levels of the blood.
Integumentary system
The integumentary system consisting of skin, hair and nails, is the largest organ of the body, taking about 15-20% of the total body mass.
