The decibel scale is a logarithmic scale that works using ratios and the base 10 scale.
For example, when expressing its power in decibels:
Change in decibels = 10 * log base 10 of the ratios of their power.
Essentially, what you get from this is that for every increase of 10dB, the sound is 10x stronger.
Therefore for an increase of (90-40)=50 would increase it by 10^5. (As it is the equivalent of multiplying by 10 five times.)
So, 100000 times stronger.
