Question

How many times hydrogen is lighter than air?

Open in App
Solution

Atoms of all elements (gases, liquids and solids) have protons, neutrons and electrons which have a definite mass. Air is made up of different gases. Every gas has some mass and volume. The lower the mass of the gas, the lighter it is.

  • Hydrogen is the lightest of all gases and the most abundant element in the universe.
  • Atomic number and atomic weight of Hydrogen is 1.
  • Air is the mixture of various gases like Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon-dioxide and noble gases. The mass of all these gases is added, due to which the density of air increases, it has more weight.
  • Hydrogen is lighter than other gases present in air. Therefore, when measuring the weight of other gases and hydrogen, hydrogen is found to be 14 times lighter than air.
