Question

How many trophic levels are human beings at in a food chain?

Open in App
Solution

All food chains and webs have at least two or three trophic levels. Generally, there are a maximum of four trophic levels. Many consumers feed at more than one tropic level. Humans, for example, are primary consumers when they eat plants such as vegetables. Not all humans belong to the same tropic level. This is due to the dietary choices each human makes. Humans, for example, are primary consumers when they eat plants such as vegetables. Many humans are omnivores, meaning they consume both plant and animal material. Thus, they may be on the third or even fourth tropic level. For example, if you consume beef you are a part of the third tropic level. If you were to eat salmon though, salmon consume other fish, and this would mean you are a tertiary consumer on the fourth tropic level. Vegans and vegetarians who do not consume fish or meat of any kind are primary consumers. They belong on the second trophic level.
