Question

How many types of reactions do enzymes participate in?

Open in App
Solution

Enzymes:

  1. Enzymes are proteins that function as biological catalysts.
  2. They accelerate various chemical reactions going on in the body.
  3. Enzymes are highly specific in their action.
  4. Enzymes contain a substrate-binding site that has a three-dimensional structure that can only bind to its complementary substrate of a similar configuration.
  5. Hence, every biochemical reaction taking place in the body is catalyzed by some specific enzymes.
  6. Example - Hydrolysis of urea is catalyzed only by the enzyme urease.

Types of enzymes-

  1. Oxidoreductase- Catalysis of oxidation and reduction reactions.
  2. Transferases- Catalysis of reactions involving the transfer of functional groups.
  3. Hydrolases- Catalysis of hydrolytic reactions.
  4. Lyases- Catalysis of the reaction involving double bonds.
  5. Isomerases- Catalysis of the reaction involving isomerization.
  6. Ligases- Catalysis of ligation processes.
