How many unshared pair of electrons does an ammonia molecule have?

Open in App
Solution

The nitrogen atom has five valence electron. In NH3, three out of five electrons of nitrogen are involved in bonding with three hydrogen atoms whereas the unbounded two electrons make up the single unshared pair of electron. Therefore, the nitrogen atom in NH3 bears one lone pair of electron.
