Question

How much ATP is needed for photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis:

  1. The process by which green plants synthesize their food using various environmental resources is termed photosynthesis.
  2. The final product of photosynthesis is glucose.
  3. The green plants that contain chlorophyll pigments can perform photosynthesis.
  4. In this process, the light energy coming from the sun is converted to chemical energy and later used by the plants.
  5. The environmental resources used by the plants are carbon dioxide, water, nutrients, and solar energy.

ATP needed for photosynthesis:

  1. In the carbon fixation process of the dark reaction of photosynthesis, ATP molecules are required.
  2. For every fixed carbon dioxide molecule 3 ATP molecules are required.
  3. Glucose is made up of 6 carbon molecules, hence 18 ATP molecules are required to fix 6 molecules of carbon in the process of photosynthesis.
