Question

How much ice will separate if a solution containing 25 g of ethylene glycol [C2H4(OH)2] in 100g of water is cooled to 10oC?
Kf(H2O) = 1.86 (25.05 g)

Solution

Depression in freezing point
ΔTf=10oC
Mass of glycol= 25g, Mass of H2O=100g
ΔTf=Kf×m ; m= molality
10=1.86×m
m=101.86=5.37
m=25/62WH2O×1000 (Molar mass of ethylene glycol=62)
5.37=403.22WH2O
WH2O=75.08g
Hence the mass of ice separated from H2O
=10075.08
=24.92g .
