In the figure given,
  • Number of complete squares covered = 3
  • Number of more than half squares covered = 1
  • Number of less than half squares covered = 2
By considering the assumptions:
  • Number of complete squares covered = 3
  • Number of more than half squares covered = 1
  • Number of less than half squares covered = 0
Thus, total number of grids covered =3+1+0=4

So,
Total approximate space occupied by the figure = Total number of grids covered × Area of one square grid.
