Question

How much momentum will a dumb-bell of mass 10 kg transfer to the floor if it falls from a height of 80 cm? Take its downward acceleration to be 10m/s2

Open in App
Solution

80 cm=0.8 m
initialy the dumbell was at rest .
let the velocity with which the dumpbell hit the floor be v
we know that
v^2=u^2+2as
where u=0,a=^g
v^2=2gs
where s=0.8m
v^2=2*g*.8
v^2=2*10*.8
v^2=16
v=4 m/s
mass of dumpbell=10 kg
'we know momentum=mass*velocity
=10*4=40 kg m/s
