Question

How much oxygen does haemoglobin carry?

Open in App
Solution

Oxygen transport by haemoglobin:

  1. Red blood cells contain haemoglobin.
  2. Hemoglobin binds to four oxygen molecules.
  3. RBCs transport approximately 97 percent of oxygen as oxyhemoglobin.
  4. Even while oxygen dissolves in the blood, only a little amount is transported this way.
  5. The oxygen binding to haemoglobin can be plotted as a function of blood oxygen partial pressure vs relative haemoglobin oxygen saturation.
  6. The resulting is sigmoidal, or S-shaped curve. Based on its molecular weight, one may calculate that 1 g of Hb can mix with 1.39 ml of oxygen.
