Question

How much should the pressure on a litre of water be changed to compress it by 0.10%?

Open in App
Solution

The bulk modulus of water is 2.2× 10 9 N/ m 2 and the fractional change in the volume of the water is 0.10%.

The bulk modulus of water is given by the equation,

B= Δp ΔV V Δp= ΔV V ×B

Substituting the values in the above expression, we get:

Δp=0.10%×2.2× 10 9 N/ m 2 = 0.10 100 ×2.2× 10 9 N/ m 2 =2.2× 10 6 N/ m 2

Hence, the change in the pressure is 2.2× 10 6 N/ m 2 .
