Question

How much would a 70kg man weigh on the moon? What would be his weight on the Earth and on the moon? (Acceleration due to gravity of moon = 1.63m/s2)

Solution

Step 1: Given

Mass of the man m=70kg

Acceleration due to the gravity of the moon gm=1.63m/s2

We know that acceleration due to gravity on earth ge=9.8m/s2

Step 2: Calculate the weight on the moon,

Mass is defined as the amount of matter present in a body.

We know that weight of an object is defined as mass multiplied by the acceleration due to gravity at that place.

W=mg, where g is the acceleration due to gravity

Therefore, the weight of the man on the moon is

Wm=mgm

Upon substituting the values we get,

Wm=70×1.63

=114.1N

Step 3: Calculate weight on earth

Therefore, the weight of the man on the earth is

We=mge

Upon substituting the values we get,

Wm=70×9.8

=686N

Hence, the weight of the man on the moon is 114.1N and on earth is 686N.
