Question

How does osmosis work in the human body?

Open in App
Solution

Role of osmosis:

  1. Osmosis can occur in both the small and large intestines, with the large intestine being the site of the majority of osmosis.
  2. Food travels from the oesophagus to the stomach and then to the small intestine as it is processed by your body.
  3. Our body absorbs critical nutrients through osmosis while you're there.

Crucial in plant’s survival:

  1. We normally water the stem end of plants and the soil in which they are growing when we water them. As a result, plants' roots absorb water, and water travels from the roots to various parts of the plant, such as leaves, fruits, and flowers.
  2. Every root works as a semipermeable barrier, allowing water molecules to move from a higher concentration (soil) to a lower concentration (roots).
  3. Hair on the roots increases the surface area of the root and hence the amount of water taken in by the plants.

Helps in regulating our cell’s life:

  1. We drink water, but our cells absorb it by osmosis, just like plant roots.
  2. The osmotic pressure between the inside and outside of the cell wall, which is a semipermeable barrier, rises as the concentration of waste products in a cell rises, and the cell absorbs water from the blood, which is a more dilute solution than the cell's cytoplasm.
  3. Osmosis allows even the most basic nutrients and minerals to enter the cells. Osmosis also helps our intestine absorb nutrients and minerals.

Maintainance of water balance:

  1. Our kidneys are critical organs that aid in the clearance of waste and poisonous chemicals from our bodies.
  2. The process of osmosis is used to recover water from waste.
  3. Osmosis is used in kidney dialysis.
  4. Because red blood cells are larger than white blood cells, they are unable to pass through the barrier and are held in the blood. As a result, waste elements are continuously eliminated from the bloodstream through osmosis.
