Cellular respiration is the process used by cells to derive energy stored in carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It begins with glycolysis and the most important steps of cellular respiration takes place in mitochondria during the electron transport chain. At the end of electron transport chain, electrons are donated to oxygen (O2) which is then combined to hydrogen ions to form water. The electron transport chain will not function if the O2 molecules does not accept electrons. Thus, oxygen plays an important role in cellular respiration.
