Question

How power is related to work?

Open in App
Solution

They both involve energy transfer.

Work done IS the energy transferred when a force moves a load Work done = force distance moved in direction of force. Work has units of Joules

Power is the rate of energy transfer Power = energy /time

Where they might both be used is when calculating the power of a machine,

Power of machine = work done / time taken

Remember, work done is the energy transferred, so these terms are interchangeable in the power equation.

Example - a person lifts a 10 kg mass, moving it a distance of 1.5m, in 2 seconds. Calculate the persons power output:

Takeg=10Nkg

Weight =mg=10⋅10=100N

Work =100N⋅1.5m=150J

Power =150J2s=75W

Work is force applied to move something over a distance.W=Fs

Power is work divided by time.P=W/t=Fs/t
