Solution

Chromosome number in gametes of humans:

  1. Humans have 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs of chromosomes, out of which 22 pairs of chromosomes are autosomes and there are two sex chromosomes.
  2. The autosomes are the exact copies of the same chromosome and the sex chromosome differs in males and females.

Chromosome in male gametes:

  1. Males have 44 autosomes and XY as the two sex chromosomes.
  2. After meiosis, the chromosome is halved and hence each gamete contain 22 autosomes and one out of the two sex chromosomes.
  3. Therefore, the male gametes or sperms can have either 22+X chromosome or 22+Y chromosome.

Chromosome in female gametes:

  1. Females have 44 autosomes and XX as the two sex chromosomes.
  2. After meiosis, the chromosome is halved and hence each gamete contain 22 autosomes and one out of the two sex chromosomes.
  3. Therefore, all the female gamete or the egg possess 22+X chromosome, as that is the only sex chromosome present.
